V. Persie No Vex!! Rooney named captain

Written By gideon oluseyi on Thursday, 14 August 2014 | 07:15

Rooney

Wayne Rooney has been named as the new captain of Manchester United by manager Louis van Gaal.
Van Gaal made the announcement following United’s final pre-season friendly against Valencia, when Rooney skippered the side to a 2-1 victory courtesy of Marouane Fellaini’s late goal.
The England international, who is also in the running to skipper the national side in the wake of Steven Gerrard’s international retirement, takes over the role from Nemanja Vidic, who departed for Inter Milan in the summer.
Midfielder Darren Fletcher has been named as the club’s vice-captain after Van Gaal handed a number of different players the armband in pre-season.
Rooney told the club’s official website, “It is a huge honour for me – and for my family – to be named captain of this great club. It is a role I will perform with great pride.
“Team spirit has always been very high in our dressing room and I am very grateful to the manager for the faith he has shown in me.
“I look forward to leading the team out on Saturday at our first match of the new season.”

Cristiano Ronaldo declared World's Richest Footballer with €148m

Written By gideon oluseyi on Tuesday, 11 March 2014 | 06:54

Today Monday March 10th, popular
football website Goal.com released
their Rich List and declared Real Madrid
and Portugal striker Cristiano Ronaldo as
the richest active footballer in the
world.
The World Footballer of the Year held
off rival Lionel Messi in the 2014 Goal
Rich List with an estimated wealth of
€148million. Retired footballer David
Beckham was the 2013 Goal Rich List
winner but since he's retired from
football, he's no longer eligible to be
put in the list.
Messi comes second with an estimated
net worth of €146million followed by
Eto'o with €85million then Wayne
Rooney with €84million, and Kaka
rounds off the top 5 with €82million.
But Goal made it clear that the list is
based on the revenue of active players
over the course of their entire careers
and not just the previous year. See the

cut...

Mourinho hits back at Mancini

Jose Mourinho has laughed off Roberto Mancini’s claim that he was responsible for Inter Milan’s UEFA Champions League success in 2010, Associated Press has reported.

The current Chelsea manager replaced Mancini at Inter in 2008 and led the Italian side to two Italian league titles, the Italian cup and the Champions League.

Speaking ahead of Chelsea’s Champions League last-16 game against Mancini’s Galatasaray, Mourinho said there was no doubt who was responsible for Inter’s success.

He said, “It’s funny, it’s funny. It’s funny because my team in the final had Lucio, Thiago Motta, Diego Milito, Samuel Eto’o, Goran Pandev and Wesley Sneijder.

“From my 11 players, he didn’t work with six of them. So he made a five-a-side team because I played with only five players from his team.”

Mancini had earlier claimed, “Mourinho won the Champions League because he took a very good team. He took a team that, like Manchester City, I had built, a team that had a strong mentality. When I went to Inter, they played very bad football and we changed this.”

IBRAHIMOVIC, RONALDO, MESSI - WHO WILL BE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TOP SCORER THIS SEASON?

Written By gideon oluseyi on Tuesday, 25 February 2014 | 09:36

The Sweden international currently leads the goalscoring charts, but he faces stiff competition from the Spain-based duo.  With the Champions League slowly approaching its business end, the race for the top scorer title is hotting up. Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo sat top of the goalscoring charts following the group stage with nine strikes, but last week Zlatan Ibrahimovic leapfrogged him with a double in Paris Saint-Germain's 4-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen.

Ronaldo and Madrid are yet to play the first leg of the last 16, though, so the Portuguese has the chance to add to his tally in Wednesday's away game against Schalke.

Elsewhere, Lionel Messi has not given up on the Champions League Golden Boot. The Argentine currently sits on seven goals, with Barcelona all but through to the quarter-finals at the expense of Manchester City.

The Premier League giants have two candidates for the top scorer title in the form of Sergio Aguero and Alvaro Negredo, but both will have to be at their best in the second leg at Barca if they are to overturn a 2-0 deficit and threaten Ibrahimovic.

Another striker who will still be dreaming of challenging for top spot is Atletico Madrid's Diego Costa, who has now netted five times following his winner against AC Milan last week.

Additionally, outsiders such as Robert Lewandowski (Borussia Dortmund), Edinson Cavani (PSG) and Thomas Muller (Bayern Munich) are all still in contention, but will have to find their scoring touch in the next few games if they are to have a realistic shot at the Champions League Golden Boot.
