EFCC arraigns fake glo agent

A self appointed agent to telecommunications
firm, Globacom, Khalil Bappah, was on
Wednesday arraigned before a Federal High
Court sitting in Gombe State by the Economic
and Financial Crimes Commission.
A statement by the EFCC spokesman, Mr.
Wilson Uwujaren, said Bappah was brought
before Justice Babatunde Quadri for offences
bordering on obtaining under false pretences.
The offences were said to be contrary to and
punishable under sections 1(2) and 1(3) of the
Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related
Offences Act, 2006.
The EFCC said Bappa's trouble began after a
petition by one Yusra Babakusa, a female
student of the Bayero University, Kano.
Yusra had alleged that sometime in April
2012, she was approached by Bappah, who
under the guise of being a glo agent,
promised that he could help her become a glo
ambassador through his contacts at
Globacom.
Bappah subsequently obtained a total of
N267,000 from her to facilitate the
appointment. Yusra stated that the accused
person forwarded a code number to her with
assurances that she would soon be called as a
glo ambassador.
Yusra was told to prepare for an interview trip
to glo head office in Lagos. To dispel any
suspicions, the accused told her the journey
had been paid for by Glo.
The EFCC said on the day of the journey,
Bappah told Yusra to wait for him, but
stopped answering her calls after a while and
eventually switched off his phone. It was then
she realised that she had been conned.
The accused was arraigned on four counts,
but he pleaded not guilty.
Justice Quadri ordered the accused to be
remanded in prison and adjourned the case
till April 28 and 29, 2014 for commencement
of trial.
