Voter registration: Violence spreads in Osun

The violent attacks, which heralded the
commencement of the ongoing voter
registration exercise in Osun State has
spread to Ila Orangun on Saturday.
Incidents of violence were reported in
some areas in Ile Ife, Ilesa, Iwo and
some other towns on Wednesday and
Thursday.
Our correspondent gathered on
Saturday that no fewer than six persons
were attacked by thugs in Ila Orangun,
while one of them who was inflicted
with a deep cut on his head was taken
to a hospital.
It was not clear who the aggressors
were but the Peoples Democratic Party
and the ruling All Progressives Congress
in the state have continued to trade
words on the incidents.
The Chairman of the PDP in Ila Orangun,
Mr. Ganiyu Afolabi, told journalists that
members of his party had been under
siege since the voter registration
started.
He alleged that thugs hired by the APC
had continued to terrorise members of
the PDP with the aim of preventing
supporters of the party and their
relatives from registering as voters.
The Chairman of the Federal Road
Maintenance Agency, Dr. Jide Adeniji,
who is an indigene of Ila Orangun, told
journalists that he had reported the
attacks to the commissioner of police in
the state.
However, the APC accused the PDP of
using policemen to intimidate members
of the ruling party and disrupting the
exercise.
