A member of the House of Representatives, Mr Opeyemi Bamidele, on Tuesday emerged as the Labour Party candidate in the June 21 governorship election in Ekiti.
Bamidele, a lawyer and former Commissioner for Information in Lagos State, emerged through voice affirmation at the party’s primaries held in Ado-Ekiti.
Delegates from all the 177 wards in the state elected Bamidele through a ‘yes’ vote since no other aspirant contested against him.
There was tight security at the venue of the election, with officials of INEC and other stakeholders in attendance to monitor the exercise.
The Deputy National Chairman of the party, Chief Joseph Akinlaja, led other leaders of the party from Abuja to the venue.
Speaking while presenting the Labour Party flag to Bamidele, Akinlaja cited Article 27(3) of the party’s constitution as basis for his emergence.
He said the party’s constitution allows for ratification of an aspirant as candidate in a situation where nobody contested against such candidate.
In his acceptance speech, Bamidele pledged to win Ekiti for the party, promising to work with other stakeholders to move the state forward.
