The Minister of Health, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, on Tuesday said the Federal Government would spend more than N80bn on its new malaria eradication project.

Chukwu made this known to newsmen at the close of the 3rd Bauchi State Council on Health meeting in Bauchi.

The health minister said, “We have made considerable progress in the fight against malaria. We have so far distributed over 60 million Long Lasting Insecticide-Treated Nets in all states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.

“We are currently working on introducing a nationwide ‘Test, Treat and Larval Source Reduction’ project to complement other strategies for the complete elimination of malaria in the country.

“The project is designed to seek out the breeding ground of mosquito and completely eliminate its offspring from Nigeria. The project will cost more than N80bn.”

He added that the national malaria control programmes had been renamed national malaria elimination programmes and state malaria elimination programmes respectively.

The minister stated that state sites for resistance monitoring had already been established.

He urged state government to collaborate with the Federal Government in establishing more sites.
