Arsenal were never among the clubs interested
in signing Hamburg starlet Hakan Calhanoglu in
January, according to the player's agent.
The Turkish midfielder - who has impressed in
the Bundesliga this season despite HSV
struggling for results - was linked with the
Gunners earlier this month, prompting
Hamburg sporting director Oliver Kreuzer to
insist he was not for sale.
Arsene Wenger also dismissed the reports as
mere speculation , and now Calhanoglu's agent
Bektas Demirtas has revealed that the north
Londoners were never an interested party -
although he expects an offer from an unnamed
Premier League club which competes in the
Champions League.
"We never said Arsenal is interested in Hakan,"
Demirtas told Goal . "They're definitely not
among the candidates."
When asked whether there was any chance that
Calhanoglu could leave Hamburg in January, he
replied: "In football anything can happen. But
it is a fact that Hakan is under contract at
Hamburger SV until 2016."
Demirtas revealed that his client's priority is to
secure a new contract with Hamburg in the
near future, but insists there is no rush to
open talks.
"We don't feel any pressure and are not in a
hurry to extend the contract," he continued.
"It is up to the club to move now and
approach us."
Calhanoglu has also been linked with Turkish
champions Galatasaray, and the 19-year-old
has admitted that Roberto Mancini's side have
made contact.
"Tugay Kerimoglu, the assistent coach of
Galatasaray, called me and told me they want
to have me in winter," he is quoted as saying
by Sport Bild.
